What is Project Mayhem?
|
 |
Okay, so now you know a little bit about Brett and Mike, but what about their boat, Project Mayhem? Project Mayhem is a Santana 35. Built by W.D. Schock, the Santana 35 is a racer-cruiser meant to be raced by a crew of up to eight people. Not exactly the perfect cruising boat for just two people, but who are we to complain?

Cruisin' for a Bruisin'

With an overall length of 35 feet, and a beam of nearly 12 feet, Project Mayhem is designed to IOR specifications, which favored wide, flat-bottomed boats to promote surfing downwind, and promotes high initial stability.

Okay, here are some suspicions. If anyone doubts these claims, feel free to Bite Me Project Mayhem is the first Santana 35 to ever cross the Equator. Project Mayhem is the first Santana 35 to ever cross the Pacific, or any other Ocean. Project Mayhem is the first Santana 35 to have logged nearly 20,000 nautical miles cruising.

Project Mayhem has taken Brett and Mike across the Pacific, from San Diego to the Marquesas, Tuamotus, Tahiti, Samoa, Tonga, New Zealand, Fiji, New Caledonia, and Australia. She has been a great boat, and has seen us through some very rough times. Watch the Cruising Project Mayhem trailer here.

Fast is Fun

For the benefit of you geeky naval architect types, here are the polars for the Santana 35. When Project Mayhem first began her trip across the Pacific, we were lucky to make 150 nautical miles per day. When our autopilot failed after crossing the Equator, we continuously upped the ante on her performance. With just Brett and Mike at the helm, we were averaging 170 nautical mile days, often pushing the 200 nautical mile per day mark. Beat that, cruising boats!
